Latest News from Llysfaen Primary School
This Tuesday the year five girls team faced an unfortunate loss to the Ton Yr Ywen girls squad. Sadly the girls lost 6-0 but our goalkeeper was incredible. The score would have been much more without her.
But for the year 5 mixed team it was different. The mixed team scored 2 goals with one of the boy’s scoring from about 15 yards out and the other goal was scored by a through ball played and a tap in. The year 5 mixed team beat the year 5 Ton Yr Ywen boy’s team 2-1 in the end but both teams showed great sportsmanship and that’s sometimes the most important part.
Taskmaster is a show on channel 4 which is a comedy and panel game. On the show, celebrities, mainly comedians, complete a series of challenging tasks.
Mr Cannon was Llysfaen Primary School’s Taskmaster, he also won the lip sync challenge last year with Mrs Cannon. We kindly asked him some questions and he said that he was a big fan of Taskmaster and he loved the experience of becoming the taskmaster. He also felt like Mrs Jenkins, the boss of our school!
The taskmaster assistant, Mr Gregory was expecting the worst because Mr Jones was planning the roles. He said it was really fun but it was also nerve wracking. His favourite task was the dictionary and the pen task or the pineapple task because both of them were based around the Taskmaster and his assistant guessing!
It was an awesome, fun filled afternoon where Ty Glas came out as eventual winners! Most of their points came from the final task which was done by the House Captains!
Children across all years enjoyed joining in with incredible class games of scrabble on Friday. Each child chose a letter and wore it on their t-shirt to school. All the classes in the school competed to make the longest or highest scoring word. On the playground, Mr Jones (teacher of 6GJ) was gathering children left and right during the year 5’s and year 6’s breaktime. They managed to make the words “children in need”,”taskmaster” and “Llysfaen Primary school”. After the scrabble game, the children were all very excited for the taskmaster. It was an amazing fun-filled day!
On the 16th of November, Llysfaen girls had their first ever netball match against Llanishen Fach Primary school. Unfortunately, it ended in a loss 4-2 but the girls had a fantastic time and everyone tried their best.
We asked some of the players how they felt about the match. One person said that all the girls play with passion and strength. Even though they lost, everyone had fun and they’re ready for the next match.
Llysfaen showed excellent resilience and teamwork throughout the match. Everyone on the sidelines was blown away by the drive and determination. The match was a joy to watch and we hope to have another match in the near future.
Odd Socks day is a day to remember that we're all unique. On Tuesday, the pupils and teachers wore Odd Socks to school to show it's okay to be different. In year three they made kindness coupons, to show that we are there for each other. Even Mrs Jenkins, our Head Teacher, got involved! In Year Two and Four they got busy showing their Socks to their classmates. Also, in Year One they had an Odd Socks celebration in the lunch hall. What a busy Odd Socks day we had!
On monday the children began celebrating diwali which is a religious holiday celebrated by sikhs and hindus. This holiday focuses on celebrating light and the banishing of dark spirits. The children were very excited to take part in these celebrations and learn all about diwali and similar celebrations and what these different celebrations mean to different religions.
Year six have been celebrating diwali by creating their own rangoli patterns out of macaroni, brown and white rice, red and brown lentils and couscous. They were incredible and all of the children enjoyed taking part in it.
Year 4 have had a very busy start to the week celebrating Diwali. They have been making curry, doing henna and creating Rangoli patterns using coffee filters. They made the curry out of yummy ingredients including rice and vegetables. To use the henna they had to copy patterns and use a steady hand. The coffee filters were a hit and everyone had a smashing time!
Last Wednesday year Five went to Cadbury World and had a wonderful time. We spoke to some year five children about their experience at Cadbury world and they mentioned that they had melted chocolate in a cup as well as getting their own chocolate bars! They all had a fantastic time and got to go on a 4D ride. They learnt that Cadbury was made by John Cadbury and his two son’s. Any chocolate left over for us?!
It has been a phenomenal start to the year for our school football teams. They have recorded wins against Ton Yr Ywen, Coed Glas and Llanishen Fach. The most impressive thing from these fixtures though has been their maturity and sportsmanship. They have represented the school brilliantly and we are really proud of the start that they have made. Long may it continue!
We carried out our usual harvest foodbank collection again this year but I'm not sure I've seen such a huge collection before!
Llysfaen out-did themselves this year and collected almost 300kg worth of food for Cardiff Foodbank. We are massively grateful to all of the families that donated and the children for reminding their parents!
Diolch, Llysfaen!
We rounded off the year in style in Year 6. Our Year 6 children had been begging all year for matches vs parents and staff and it finally came true!
Two thrilling games were played, netball on Tuesday and football on Wednesday. No mercy was shown by the parents though! None of this 'letting the kids win' mentality!
The netball still went down to the final few minutes and the football was decided on a penalty shoot-out!
We are so proud of how our Year 6 children have progressed throughout the year and we wish them all the best for High School where we look forward to seeing even more of this sporting prowess!
